AERIAL ELECTROMAGNETIC
MAPPING

Southland Aerial Electromagnetic Mapping (SkyTEM)

The Aerial Electromagnetic (AEM) mapping project is a scientific investigation to find out more information on aquifers in the Northern Southland region, covering parts of the upper Oreti and Mataura river catchments. Aerial mapping was carried out in parts of the upper Oreti and Mataura in late 2022. Knowing more about the aquifer/s will help Southland to identify the best ways to balance environmental protection, the increased demand for water, and events such as droughts.

About the Aerial Groundwater Mapping Project

Some information is known about the aquifer (e.g., from groundwater drilling) but there are information gaps that it is important to be fill. Knowing more about the aquifer/s will help Southland to identify the best ways to balance environmental protection, the increased demand for water, and events such as droughts.

Who is supporting the project?

The project has formed from collaboration between AIA and Environment Southland, in discussion with iwi. The $1.8 million project is funded through Aqua Intel Aotearoa.

What we want to learn

This study will give us a better understanding of:

  • what the aquifer looks like (e.g. depth, extent, geology)

  • how the aquifer is connected to wetlands, lakes and streams

  • the relationship between shallow (unconfined) and deeper (confined) aquifer systems

  • how groundwater recharges.
